HC Deb 19 April 1990 vol 170 cc1017-8W
Mr. Fisher

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what expenditure was made by his Department on(a) the arts and (b) design in the last financial year.

Mr. Lang

[holding answer 21 December 1989]: Expenditure by the Scottish Office was £21.015 million in 1988–89 on the three national institutions (the National Library of Scotland, the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Museums of Scotland). Further expenditure of £1.998 million covered assistance to the Scottish Museums Council, the Scottish Film Council, Scottish Film Production Fund and various arts and cultural organisations.

The Scottish Office does not directly fund design, although I understand that the Scottish Development Agency does, from time to time, support various design projects. Details of the agency's expenditure on such projects are not separately recorded.
