HC Deb 18 April 1990 vol 170 c963W
94. Mr. Malcolm Bruce

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will make a statement on the trade deficit.

Mr. Redwood

Exports from the United Kingdom are running at record levels. The present deficit has been caused by excessive growth in domestic demand in relation to domestic industrial capacity. It is therefore a macro-economic problem which will be resolved by the sound macro-economic policies which the Government are pursuing.
