HC Deb 18 April 1990 vol 170 cc917-8W
Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether Sierra Leone currently has(a) arrears owed to the International Monetary Fund, and (b) an economic programme agreed with the International Monetary Fund; and whether there is currently a British aid programme in Sierra Leone.

Mrs. Chalker

Yes, Sierra Leone has arrears to the International Monetary Fund amounting to $91 million at the end of March 1990. There is currently no economic programme agreed with the International Monetary Fund, but discussions with the fund and the World Bank are taking place.

The current British programme to Sierra Leone comprises technical co-operation and training; expenditure in 1989–90 amounted to some £1.6 million.
