48. Mr. Martlew

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what information he has as to how many cases have been brought under the Consumer Protection Act 1987 concerning product safety which were already covered by an approved standard.

Mr. Forth

Enforcement of the safety provisions of the Consumer Protection Act 1987 is mainly the responsibility of the trading standards departments of local authorities. A number of suppliers have been successfully prosecuted for breaches of the general safety requirement, but information is not available on whether these cases involved an approved standard.
