Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many managed conservations areas he has established; if he will list them; and if he will make a statement as to how he intends to protect their ecology.

Conservation groups and focal points, several of which cover more than one establishment, are in existence at the locations across the defence estate listed in the table. Conservation groups include among their members both professional and amateur naturalists, including representatives of such bodies as the Nature Conservancy Council and county naturalist trusts. They provide advice upon how the ecology of the area should be protected and, where possible, enhanced. Account is taken of this advice in the management of the area concerned, to the maximum extent consistent with military requirements. Focal points exist at those establishments at which, although there is natural history interest, there is no formal conservation group.
