§ Mr. Nicholas BrownTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the present population of(a) the city of Newcastle, (b) the part of Newcastle covered by the inner-city partnership action programme's geographical boundaries and (c) the part of Newcastle upon Tyne, East parliamentary constituency that lies within the inner-city partnership action programme's geographical boundaries.
§ Mr. MoynihanThe Registrar-General's mid-year estimates (1988) give the population of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne as 279,700. Newcastle city council estimates that the current population of its inner area is about 110,000, of which approximately 48,000 is within the Newcastle upon Tyne, East parliamentary constituency.
§ Mr. Nicholas BrownTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what were the criteria he used in deciding to withdraw inner-city partnership funding from the east Newcastle victim support scheme.
§ Mr. MoynihanThis project, a former Tyne and Wear county council scheme, has received UP support since 1980–81. In 1986–87 it was submitted by the city of 785W Newcastle for tapered funding on the standard arrangements for time-expired projects agreed by partnership committee. This funding ceased, as agreed, on 31 March 1990.
§ Mr. Nicholas BrownTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment which of the approved projects under the inner-city partnership action programme listed in his letter to the hon. Member for Newcastle upon Tyne, East, dated 29 March, are located in Newcastle upon Tyne, East parliamentary constituency.
§ Mr. MoynihanThe following four projects approved in the 1990–91 Newcastle/Gateshead partnership action programme are located within the Newcastle upon Tyne, East parliamentary constituency: Wharrier Street school "Design For Play" (phase 2); the St. Oswald's environmental improvements project; the East End psychiatric community care scheme; and the East End carers outreach project. A further 10 new approved projects are inner-city-wide initiatives.
