To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the current extent of the cervical screening programme for women between the age of 25 years and 35 years in England and Wales; and what is the current incidence of cervical cancer among this age group.

For information on the cervical cancer screening programme I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for Leicester, East (Mr. Vaz) on 3 April at columns518-19. The number of newly registered cases of malignant neo-plasm of the cervix uteri in women aged 25 to 34 years inclusive in 1984 (England and Wales) was 622; the rate per 100,000 (female) population was 18.3.
