Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many people are suffering from Alzheimer's disease(a) nationally and (b) in North Staffordshire district health authority.

Mr. Freeman

This information is not collected centrally.

Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what support is currently available to local groups offering support to the carers of those with Alzheimer's disease; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

Such local voluntary groups are eligible for grants from health authorities or local authority social services departments. They will continue to benefit from the project work centrally funded under the Government's "Helping the Community to Care" programme. At national level, the Department currently gives a grant of £130,000 per year to the Alzheimer's Disease Society as a contribution towards the running costs of its headquarters' services.
