HC Deb 05 April 1990 vol 170 c745W
Mr. Andrew Bowden

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what representations he has received regarding actions of the West Norfolk and Wisbech health authority in respect of terminating pregnancies on social grounds; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The Department has received correspondence from four hon. Members on this subject. I understand that the health authority has not received any formal representations. Under the Abortion Act 1967 a pregnancy may be terminated only if two registered medical practitioners are of the opinion, formed in good faith, that an abortion is justified in terms of the Act. It is for health authorities to decide the level of their provision for abortion services in the light of local needs and priorities and competing claims on resources.

Mr. Freeman

We are not aware of any medical conditions for which treatment services exist in Wales which are not similarly provided in England.
