HC Deb 04 April 1990 vol 170 c677W
Mr. Robert Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the total number of vacant houses classified for the use of service personnel.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

As at 30 November 1989, the latest date for which complete figures are available, the total number of vacant properties in the United Kingdom, both houses and flats, classified as service married quarters was 12,423. Many of these properties were either undergoing or awaiting major maintenance work or modernisation, some were already allotted to service families who were due to move in shortly and others were in the process of disposal.
