To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement about progress on trunk road schemes during 1989–90 and about the progress expected in 1990–91.

Details of the major scheme starts made and expected to be made are as follows:

Schemes with an estimated cost of over £1 million started since 1 April 1989

  • M80 Stepps Bypass
  • A82 Luss Bypass
  • A7 Dalkeith Bypass
  • A68 Newton St. Boswells Bypass
  • A76 Cumnock and Auchinleck Bypass
  • A87 Dornie Bypass
  • A701 Ae Bridge
  • A94 Stracathro Junction

These schemes had a total value of £66 million.

Schemes with an estimated cost of over £l million expected to start by 31 March 1991

M74 Kirkpatrick Fleming-Gretna A74 Upgrading schemes

These schemes have a total value of £130 million, reflecting the 28 per cent. increase in trunk road funds for this year and the still further increase for the following year. I will be making a more detailed announcement on A74 upgrading schemes later this month. As to completions of major schemes, in 1989–90 eight major schemes were completed and in 1990–91 another 10 schemes are expected to be completed.
