To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what assessment has been made of the effect on threat assessments of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Hungary and Czechoslovakia.

The complete withdrawal of Soviet troops from Czechoslovakia and Hungary is currently due to be completed by mid-1991, and we shall monitor this process with interest. When completed, these withdrawals will obviously have a significant effect on Soviet military capability in the central region.
