asked Her Majesty's Government:

What would be the financial saving to the nearest billion pounds of a cut in British military expenditure to the average level of (a) other NATO countries; and (b) European NATO countries.

Based on 1989 average market exchange rates, to the nearest billion pounds the estimated savings would be as follows:

  1. (a)£ 2 billion;
  2. (b)£ 13 billion.
