HC Deb 31 October 1989 vol 159 c125W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what representations he has received regarding free prescriptions and free dental treatment for all students; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

During the last 12 months we have received six letters from hon. Members and four letters from members of the public about free prescriptions for students. We have also had a small number of representations about free dental treatment for students.

Students up to the age of 18 are entitled to free prescriptions and free dental treatment. Students aged 19 and over can apply for help under the NHS low income scheme. We believe it is right that students of that age who can afford to pay for their prescriptions and dental treatment should do so.
