To ask the Minister for the Arts what grants are available to museums during the current year; and what were available five, 10 and 15 years ago; and if he will make a statement.

Over the last 15 years central Government expenditure on museums and galleries has risen as follows:

1974–75, £17 million; 1979–80, £54 million; 1984–85, £98 million; 1989–90, £158 million. (All figures except 1974–75 include building expenditure.) The real terms increase since 1979–80 is 25 per cent.
