To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the timetable for implementing his plans for self-governing status; and if he has a particular date by which expressions of interest have to be registered.

[holding answer 26 October 1989]: If the hon. Gentleman studies the White Paper he will find that on page 79 we indicated that we aim to establish at least two National Health Service trusts in Scotland by 1992. No deadline has been set for the receipt of expressions of interest in self-governing status.
