To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has to extend dual carriageway on the Al north of the Morpeth bypass.

Mr. Atkins

An improvement scheme for dualling a section of the A1 at Cawledge, south of Alnwick, commenced on 10 April 1989 and is expected to be completed early 1990.

Other dual carriageway proposals in the road programme for the Al north of Morpeth are the Brownieside improvement and Marshall Meadows to the Scottish Border improvement. On current planning the start of works on these schemes is scheduled for the spring 1991.
