HL Deb 24 October 1989 vol 511 cc1359-60WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many persons have been killed or severely injured by dogs in each of the last five years; how many of those affected were children; and in how many cases were Rottweilers involved.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Hooper)

The table shows the number of deaths registered with an underlying cause of death due to dog bite. Exact information on injuries caused by dogs is not available; the table shows estimates of the numbers treated as in-patients in NHS hospitals as a result of dog bites, the latest available data for which is 1985. Information on the number of Rottweilers involved in such incidents is unavailable.
