To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security by what percentage he intends to increase pensions in this year's uprating.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

Retirement pension will be increased by 7.6 per cent. with effect from 9 April 1990. The increase will take full account of the movement in the retail prices index over the 12 months to September 1989.

52. Mr. Lofthouse

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security which index he proposes to use this year in uprating pensions.

This year, as in previous years, my right hon. Friend will uprate pensions in line with the movement in the retail prices index.
