HC Deb 23 October 1989 vol 158 c291W
Mr. Kirkwood

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what guidelines exist for the emergency services which may come into contact with blood after an accident; and if he will seek to ensure that a standard procedure is followed at all times to protect personnel regardless of the personal circumstances of victims involved.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Contact with blood after an accident may expose members of the emergency services to the risk of contracting one of the blood-borne infectious diseases. Guidance on the operational safety precautions which should be taken to reduce this risk is given in the circulars which the Home Office has issued to police forces and fire brigades on AIDS and hepatitis B. Guidance for the ambulance services is a matter for my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Health.
