To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total cost to the United Kingdom's balance of payments in pounds sterling in the latest available year of the purchase by the Central Electricity Generating Board of electricity from France.

The provisional value (on a cost, insurance and freight basis) of imports of electricity from France to the United Kingdom in 1988 was £268 million.
