HC Deb 23 October 1989 vol 158 c302W
Mr. Malcolm Bruce

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he is taking to counter the illegal trade in hawksbill and green turtles; when he last raised the matter with the Japanese Government; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

Infractions of the CITES controls would be matters for the CITES Secretariat. the United Kingdom strictly implements the provisions of the convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora (CITES) under which commercial trade in hawksbill and green turtles is already prohibited. We have not raised the matter with the Japanese Government.
