HC Deb 19 October 1989 vol 158 cc187-8W
12. Mr. Sillars

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his latest estimate of the expected balance of payments deficit in the current year.

Mr. Lilley

Mr. Wareing

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans he has to reduce the deficit in the United Kingdom's balance of payments.

Mr. Norman Lamont

Tighter monetary policy is already slowing the growth of demand, and this will eventually lead to a reduction in the current account deficit. However, my right hon. Friend the Chancellor has always made clear that the current account would be one of the last indicators to respond to the tightening of monetary policy.
