HC Deb 18 October 1989 vol 158 c142W
Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what urgent measures he is taking to combat dangers to public health posed by rats and cockroaches.

Mr. Freeman

Local authorities rather than health authorities are responsible under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 for ensuring, as far as is practicable, that their areas are kept free of rats and mice.

In respect of food premises, the Food Hygiene (General) Regulations 1970 which are enforced by local authorities, require the prevention, so far as is reasonable practicable, of any risk of infestation by rats, mice or insects.
