Mr. Ryder

Inflation is expected to average 72 per cent. in the fourth quarter of 1989, as outlined in the Autumn Statement forecast.

The underlying inflation rate in the United Kingdom is 6.1 per cent.; the inflation rates in other G7 countries range from 2.6 per cent. in Japan to 6.8 per cent. in Italy.

The all-items RPI inflation rate for 1989 probably peaked in May and June of this year at a rate of 8.3 per cent., far lower than the peak rate of 26.9 per cent. in August 1975 under the last Labour Government.
