To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people were classified as homeless in(a) Wales, (b) Gwent and (c) Newport in 1979; and what is the most recent figure.

[holding answer 27 November 1989]: The number of cases accepted as homeless during 1979 and 1988 is shown in the following table:

1979 1988
Newport 313 643
Gwent 1,115 1,671
Wales 4,676 6,818

The number of persons involved in these cases is 864 and 1,635 (Newport), 2,950 and 3,891 (Gwent) and 12,698 and 17,105 (Wales), for 1979 and 1988 respectively.
