To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many homes in Britain are receiving multi-channel television through cable television systems at the latest available date.

I understand from the Cable Authority that on 1 October 1989 a total of 287,219 households in the United Kingdom were connected to cable systems, of which 75,811 were connected to broad band cable systems.
