HC Deb 27 November 1989 vol 162 c112W
Sir Russell Johnston

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland when he expects a bypass to be constructed around the town of Nairn.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

At present there are no immediate proposals for a Nairn bypass. Nairn is predominantly an end destination and the volume of through traffic on the A96 is insufficient to justify provision of a bypass.

There are, however, plans for a major scheme to build a new Nairn railway bridge which will include improvements to the layout of the junction of the A96 and A939, provide a new alignment under the railway and considerably ease traffic flow at the east end of the town.
