HC Deb 16 November 1989 vol 160 c435W
Mr. Amos

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many(a) doctors, (b) nurses and (c) administrative staff were employed in the Northern regional health authority for each year since 1979; what are the projections for future years; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

[holding answer 14 November 1989]: The information requested is given in the table. Since 1979 the numbers of doctors, nurses and administrative staff employed in the northern region have all increased, at the same time as the workload undertaken has increased significantly. The Government's manpower plan "Hospital medical staffing: Achieving a Balance" aims to bring about a future expansion to the consultant grade at a rate of approximately 2 per cent. per annum. In addition the introduction of "Project 2000" will have a significant impact on the recruitment and skill-mix of staff employed in nursing in the future. Details of manpower projections in the northern region are a matter for the regional health authority.
