Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make it his policy to oppose moves by other members of the EEC to adopt a common currency managed by a common central bank without United Kingdom participation.

[holding answer 15 November 1989]: The United Kingdom Government are playing a full part in discussions about the future economic and monetary arrangements throughout the Community. The Government do not accept stages 2 and 3 of economic and monetary union as recommended in the Delors report and have proposed an alternative approach.
