§ Mr. ParryTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent representations Her Majesty's Government have made to China concerning human rights.
§ Mr. MaudeFollowing the events of June, the Presidency made a number of representations to the Chinese authorities stressing the concern of the Twelve at the repression in China. On 27 June the European Council issued a declaration which requested the Chinese authorities to respect human rights. Within the United Nations system we raised our concerns about human rights in China in the July meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. My right hon. Friend the then Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs also raised the situation in China in his speech to the United Nations general assembly on 27 September.
