To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give an estimate of the amount of staff time lost in the National Health Service in Scotland as a result of smoking-related diseases; and if he will make a statement.

No information is available centrally on which such an estimate could be based.

§ Mr. Home Robertson
To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make it his policy to take active steps to protect non-smoking employees of his Department against the effects of passive smoking; and if he will make a statement.

§ Mr. Malcolm Rifkind
The policy of my Department is currently under review. The review process has incorporated a comprehensive survey of smoking habits and attitudes of staff, conducted late in 1988.
