HC Deb 14 November 1989 vol 160 cc164-5W
Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will publish his latest estimates of(a) the number of employees covered by occupational sick pay schemes, expressed also as a percentage of the total workforce, (b) the number of male employees covered by occupational sick pay schemes, expressed also as a percentage of the male workforce, and (c) the number of female employees covered by occupational sick pay schemes, expressed also as a percentage of the female workforce.

Mrs. Gillian Shephard

Out of a total work force of 22 million it is estimated that 20 million (91 per cent.) are covered by an occupational sick pay scheme. These comprise about 11 million men (90 per cent. of the male work force) and 9 million women (92 per cent. of the female work force). This information is based on the report on occupational sick pay schemes by IFF Research Ltd for the Department of Social Security, published in November 1988.
