To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the number of letters received by his Department expressing(a) support and (b) opposition to the introduction of student loans; and if he will make a statement.

Since the publication of the White Paper on top-up loans for students we have received about 4,100 letters. Many supported the principle that students should contribute to their own living costs.
