To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the current estimate of the cost of the second Severn crossing.

Mr. Atkins

Responses were received on 2 October from the four consortia invited to tender for the construction of the second Severn crossing. These are now being considered. At this stage details of costs must remain confidential.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the current expected date of completion of the second Severn crossing.

No date has yet been decided, but if all goes well the crossing could be completed by the end of 1995.
