HC Deb 13 November 1989 vol 160 cc62-3W
Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what are, for each year since 1979, the total subsidies, direct or indirect, given to farmers in Scotland.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Detail of direct subsidy payments is given in the table. The figures include the estimated Scottish share of market support expenditure incurred by the intervention board for agricultural produce. They exclude educational, advisory, research and development services provided by, among others, the Scottish agricultural colleges and Scottish agricultural research institutes and the Department. Information on indirect subsidies, for example, the benefit of exemption from rating, is either not available or could he obtained only at disproportionate cost.
