Mr. Alfred Morris

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the current cost of British overseas aid; and how much of the total is allocated to the dependent territories and how much to each of the dependent territories.

Mrs. Chalker

In the current financial year the aid programme stands at £1,500 million. Last financial year we spent £44,095,000 on aid for the dependent territories broken down as follows:

£000s
Anguilla 1,778
British Virgin Islands 2,033
Montserrat 2,158
Turks and Caicos Islands 5,046
Falkland Islands 3,622
Gibralter1 8,733
St. Helena2 20,725
TOTAL 44,095
1 Includes assistance towards a pensions settlement.
2 Includes payments for a new ship—the island's only physical link with the rest of the world.

This financial year we expect to spend a broadly similar total.
