HC Deb 09 November 1989 vol 159 c761W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what provisions have existed(a) since May 1979 and (b) since June 1986, to ensure that plutonium originating in safeguarded electricity board reactors in the United Kingdom has never been put into the military unsafeguarded stockpile following reprocessing of Magnox spent fuel at Sellafield.

Mr. Michael Spicer

Pursuant to the requirements of article 14 of INFCIRC 263 the Department of Energy must approve all withdrawals of nuclear material from safeguards. It is Government policy that plutonium originating from the electricity board reactors will not be used for defence purposes.
