§ Mr. ButterfillTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of current personal sector debt is accounted for by consumer credit; what percentage of the consumer debt is in the form of credit card borrowing; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. RyderAt the end of 1988 consumer credit formed 14 per cent. of personal sector borrowing. At that time bank credit card lending formed 16 per cent. of consumer credit. More recent but less complete figures indicate that there has been no change since then in the proportion of consumer credit represented by credit card borrowing.
