§ 56. Mr. IrvineTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assistance the United Kingdom is giving to support primary education in India.
§ Mrs. ChalkerA grant of just over £31 million was approved earlier this year for a primary education project in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It provides for the design and construction of some 1,100 teachers centres and 4,000 classrooms mostly in remote rural areas throughout the state. It will also cover the training of teachers and teacher educators, teaching materials and research and evaluation activities designed to measure and improve the effectiveness of training and child-centred learning techniques.
