§ Mr. Norman LamontThe August 1989 index of manufacturing output (based on 1985 =100, seasonally adjusted) was 120.0, 8.1 per cent. higher than the level of 111.0 in August 1973. Figures for individual months can be erratic, however, and a more reliable comparison can generally be made on the basis of three-month on three-month changes. On this latter basis, in the three months to August 1989, manufacturing output was 7.3 per cent. higher than in the same period in 1973.
