To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was total expenditure on population activities for each of the years 1987 and 1988; and what percentage this represented of the total gross public expenditure on overseas aid for each of the years 1987 and 1988.

In 1987 total expenditure on population-related activities was £15.9 million which represented 1.3 per cent. of gross public expenditure on overseas aid. Of this figure, £13.2 million was spent through multilateral population programmes.

Final disbursement figures for bilateral government assistance in the population sector are not yet available for 1988. Contributions to multilateral population programmes in 1988 totalled £14.066 million.
