§ Mr. ButcherThe Department does not project the total number of school pupils likely to receive special education. The number of pupils in special schools (maintained and non-maintained) in England is projected to be:

Comparable figures for the financial year 1990–91 and subsequent years have still to be determined as part of the yearly review of future needs. The total spent on special education will partly depend on decisions taken by individual local authorities about the pattern of delivery in their areas.
