§ Lord Kennetasked Her Majesty's Government:
What assessment they have made on the Honduran Government's move to democracy and its determination to remove foreign advisers, reduce its armed forces and stop the destabilisation of neighbouring countries.
§ The Minister of State for Defence Procurement (Lord Trefgarne)The present government in Honduras was elected in 1985 in free and fair elections. This was the first time for over 50 years that one democratically elected government had handed over to another in Honduras. New elections due in November this year will mark a further important milestone in the development of democracy in Honduras.
Honduras is committed to the Esquipulas and subsequent agreements designed to strengthen democracy and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Its armed forces are substantially smaller than those of Nicaragua.
