HL Deb 17 May 1989 vol 507 cc1275-6WA
Lord Grimond

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the current salaries of the Chairman of the Governors, of the Director General and of the Deputy Director-General of the BBC, what these salaries were last year and what has been their percentage increase over the last three years.

The Earl of Arran

The salary of the Chairman of the BBC effective from 1.10.88, is £37,360. His previous salary, effective from 1.4.88, was £36,540. The annual average salary increases in the last three financial years were: 3.4% (1986–87), 4.5% (1987–88) and 4.3% (1988–89).

The salaries of the Director General and Deputy Director General of the BBC, and those of other members of the Board of Management, are set by the Board of Governors. I understand that it is not the BBC's practice to publish details of individual salaries, although the Corporation's Annual Report and Accounts (a copy of which is held in the Library) carries details of the number of staff in different salary bands.
