HL Deb 16 May 1989 vol 507 c1167WA
Lord Carter

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps are being taken to ensure that imported eggs do not carry salmonella organisms.

Lord Henley

Using their powers under the Imported Food Regulations 1984, port health authorities are able to test imported eggs for the presence of salmonella, and a systematic monitoring system has recently been set up. However, most egg imports into the United Kingdom are from the EC and the Government's primary objective is to secure action on a Community-wide basis to reduce the problem of infection at its source. The Government are accordingly working with the Commission and other member states on new Commission proposals designed to achieve this.
