HC Deb 15 May 1989 vol 153 c26W
Mr. Robin Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give for each year since 1979 the total health and personal social services(a) current expenditure (gross) and (b) capital expenditure (net); and if he will give those totals adjusted by the HCHS pay and price deflator.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The information in the format requested is not fully available. As I have already indicated to the hon. Member in my letter of 30 March 1988, there is no index which relates to the movement of pay and prices within the Health Service in Scotland. The Department of Health maintains indices for pay and price movements in England but the composition of expenditure on hospital and community health services in Scotland —particularly the proportions accounted for by the various categories of staff costs—differs from that in England.

Details of expenditure broken down into current (gross) and capital (net), are given in the following tables.

Total expenditure on health and personal social services in Scotland
Current (gross) Capital (net)
£ million cash £ million cash
11979–80
1980–81 1,537 78
1981–82 1,726 108
1982–83 1,865 116
1983–84 1,995 122
1984–85 2,135 137
1985–86 2,264 151

1987–88 2,651 129
