§ Mr. Robin CookTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will give for each year since 1979 the total health and personal social services(a) current expenditure (gross) and (b) capital expenditure (net); and if he will give those totals adjusted by the HCHS pay and price deflator.
§ Mr. GristThe information requested is as follows:
Total Health and Personal Social Services £ million Current expenditure (gross) Capital expenditure (net) 1978–79 460.1 27.4 1979–80 544.3 29.9 1980–81 692.8 37.5 1981–82 779.2 45.8 1982–83 856.5 50.5 1983–84 913.3 54.2 1984–85 979.9 58.5 1985–86 1,047.6 59.5 1986–87 1,124.6 66.7 1987–88 1,252.7 69.8 1988–89 1,403.3 64.8 Separate pay and price factors are not maintained for Wales. The hospital and community health services pay and price deflator, maintained for England by the Department of Health, is an index of inflationary pressures on current expenditure in the hospital and community health services alone. It would be inappropriate therefore to apply this index to total health and personal social services expenditure.
