HL Deb 10 May 1989 vol 507 cc745-6WA
The Earl of Selkirk

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is their intention that the Channel rail link should connect directly with Newcastle, Edinburgh, Thurso, Glasgow or Liverpool in addition to London.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

It is intended that the Channel Tunnel rail link should be connected to the rest of the British Rail network. The precise destinations to be served depend on BR's assessment of the commercial opportunities.

BR will publish its initial plans for direct services for passengers and freight from the Channel Tunnel by the end of 1989, as required by the Channel Tunnel Act.
