The public sector debt repayment in 1988–89 is provisionally estimated at £14.3 billion, equivalent to 3 per cent. of GDP.

Mr. Lilley

The total public sector debt repayment in 1987–88 and 1988–89 was £.17.8 billion. As my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer said in his Budget statement, this is expected to reduce net debt interest costs by over £1.5 billion a year.
